ECKLUND TAKES CHARGE AFTER TWO DAYS OF RACING IN MIAMI

9 March 2007

With five races completed in a ten race series, Jeff Ecklund from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on 'USA-32 STAR' commands the lead of the Melges 32 fleet at the 2007 ACURA Miami Grand Prix.

Both races today produced similar racing conditions as seen on Thursday with some extremely tight racing. The real show stoppers — M32 veteran sailors Marty Kullman and Mike Carroll from St. Petersburg, Florida on 'USA-131 New Wave' nailing the game taking the bullet in race four. Despite the shifty winds 2007 Key West Race Week Champion Claudio Recchi from Italy on 'ITA-093 Let's Roll' finished a strong second, just ahead of Ecklund in third.

For the final race of the day, the Melges 32s kicked it up a gear with Ecklund landing his third bullet of the regatta, Kullman/Carroll right in there for second and Recchi was third. Hanging tough was Rick Orchard from Flowery Branch, Georgia and his Grins team in fourth.

Looking ahead to Saturday's racing the name of the game is no mistakes for Recchi as he has his sights set on the top spot, and especially for Ecklund. Only two points separate these great competitors. The forecast calls for a little more breeze than today. Another nine points back is the second of two international entries within the fleet, Peter Rogers from Hamble, UK on 'GBR-121 Highlife' is seated comfortably in third. Kullman and Carroll are just one slim point back in fourth and Orchard occupies fifth overall.
