Melges 32 Expects A Very Competitive Nationals, July 13-15

29 June 2007

The 2007 Melges 32 U.S. National Championship is taking place on July 13-15, in conjunction with the historic 23rd Annual Newport Regatta in Newport, Rhode Island. Hosted by Sail Newport, this will be the second National Championship for the Melges 32 where more than twenty teams are expected to compete. Among the field of fierce competitors is reigning Melges 32 National Champion Jeff Ecklund (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) on 'STAR'. "I'm really looking forward to sailing in a large Melges 32 fleet in Newport. It is one of my favorite sailing venues."

"We have the option to sail in flat water with current on the inside and open ocean outside," commented Ecklund. "The variety makes it a great contest for a National Championship. I hope it will be as windy as it was last year."

Also in attendance and definitely one of Ecklund's toughest rivalries is 2007 Melges 32 East Coast Champions, Marty Kullman and Mike Carroll (Tampa, Fla.) on 'New Wave'. "We're not going into this regatta specifically looking to beat anyone in particular, we're just going to go out there and execute. We'll have a few things that we will focus on and fix to make better. We're going to go out and get the best results we can out of every race," said Kullman in a recent interview.

The National Championship will not be without international flair. There will be competitors from Australia, Italy and the UK in addition to the vast expanse of teams from the United States. Geoff Masters (Sydney, Australia) on 'Melges Asia Pacific' is hoping for a podium place. He will be taking delivery of yet another new Melges 32 in which he will be shipping off to Australia or via Asia for the King's Cup after Nationals in Newport. On board with Masters is Heath Walters, the Australian and Asia Pacific distributor of the Melges 32. Walters reports that the level of interest is high down under. The Melges 32 will be on display at the Sydney International Boat Show, August 2-7, 2007.

2007 ACURA Key West Race Week and Miami Grand Prix Champion, Claudio Recchi (Italy) on 'Let's Roll' will be there with his Italian brigade in tow. On board with Recchi is Federico Michetti, president of Melges Europe. "The Melges 32 is like a drug. You just can't get enough. It is so much fun, really fast and you can trailer it anywhere," said Michetti. "There is such a strong level of competition in this class. We may have done very well earlier in the year, but all the teams are getting better. In Key West and Miami the winds were light and the racing was tighter than ever, but the Nationals will be tough."

Great Britain's Joe Woods (Torquay, UK) on 'Red' will also be ready to race. His second place finish at the 2007 Sperry Top-Sider Melges 32 Chicago NOOD Regatta gives every indication that this marvelous English team will do well.
