Melges 32s Practice And Party In Newport

12 July 2007

The weather was gorgeous in Newport, Rhode Island today as the Melges 32 fleet tuned and tested the waters of Rhode Island Sound and Naragansett Bay. Racing commences Friday, July 13th with a fleet sixteen strong. Competitors have traveled from all over the world to participate including 2007 Key West and Miami Race Week Claudio Recchi from Italy, Joe Woods from Torquay, UK and Geoff Masters from Syndey, Australia. And, from the USA — Glenn Darden from Ft. Worth, Texas; Kip Meadows from Rocky Mount, North Carolina; reigning Melges 32 National Champion Jeff Ecklund from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Rick Orchard from Flowery Branch, Georgia and; Mike Carroll and Marty Kullman from Tampa, Florida.

In additional to spending time under beautiful sunshine and blue skies practicing for the inevitable heated, three-day competition, the Melges 32 fleet also took care of entry duties such as weigh-in and onsite registration only to enjoy a Class BBQ at the Newport Shipyard afterwards. The perfect wind down to a great day!

Racing will continue Saturday and conclude on Sunday. Daily reports and stories will be made available each day following the races. Stay tuned to this site — the official site of the Melges 32 Class Association.
