The Melges 32 Takes Off In Italy

7 September 2007

Milan, Italy - The 57th Annual Centromiglia del Garda kicks off this weekend, 8-9 September and amongst its more than 250 participants are four, very competitive Melges 32 teams. After an impressive debut at Torbole Race Week last July, the Melges 32 class is growing rapidly in Europe. This will be the first time a full-fledged fleet of M32s have competed in Europe and there is much, much more planned for 2008.

The four boats competing are nothing short on talent including Maurizio Abba with Danielle Cassinari as tactician and Luca Valerio at the helm for 'ITA-159 Team Alina'; Francesco Martino with Melges 24 World Champion crew Alberto Bolzan calling tactics on 'ITA-161 Action Team'; Maurizio Schiavi on 'ITA-165 'Midea' with tactician Eros Angeli; and owner Lanfranco Cirillo aboard 'ITA-164 Team Fantastica' will have 2006 Melges 24 World Champion Nicola Celon serving as tactician. Cirillo will be in good company with America's Cup Mascalzone Latino's Dede De Luca as well as Riamondo Tonelli and Manuel Giubellini both also Melges 24 World Champion crew members.

"The Melges 32 is on fire," said Federico Michetti, president of Melges Europe. In addition to the above named, the brand new Melges 32 owners list in Europe steadily grows longer. Notables such as Lorenzo Santini 'ITA-159', Fausto Rubini 'ITA-170', Massimo e Stefano Leporati 'ITA-175', Armando Giulietti 'ITA-173' and Melges 32 class veteran Joe Woods with 'GBR-500' from the UK will be taking delivery shortly. In just four months, a total of nine have been sold while more inquiries are received daily.

To compliment, a 2008 European/Mediterranean Racing Circuit is in the planning stages. "We are working hard to organizing a great 2008 international racing schedule." said Michetti.
