Dream Weekend For Youth Sailing All-Stars At Melges 32 Winter Tune-up Regatta

With eighteen Melges 32s pre registered and ready to race in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida this weekend at the 2007 Winter Tune-Up Regatta, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for America's elite in youth sailing. Hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club (LYC), this event also offers a lot of exclusives for Melges 32 class owners as they practice and prepare for the heated competition at ACURA Key West 2008. While in the same instant, it also provides a distinct chance for Laser Radial Champion Colin Smith to sail with Michael Illbruck and the likes of John Kostecki; Melges X Boat Champion Addy Ferguson to sail with Melges 24 World Champions Jeff Ecklund and Harry Melges; and Melges 24 World Champion crew member and Opti sailor extraordinaire Mac Agnese to sail with international entrant Joe Woods from the UK.

Other top youth sailors scheduled to make appearances are Alex and Haley Fox, Dominique Wright, Karl and Elizabeth Ryder, Kai Frieseke, Erika Reineke, Chanel Miller, Caroline Wright, Christina Lewis, Zack Kelchner, Marissa Lihan, Duncan and Christopher Williford, Sam Peirson, Nikki Medley, Andrew Fox, Holly Toppa, Julian Harris and Megan Place. Some of these gifted and talented youngsters participated last year in the 'Take A Junior Sailing Day' program and are back for more in 2007, this time enjoying two days of very cool, fast and competitive sailing. The combination of LYC's successful breeding ground for sailing excellence and a Melges 32 one-of-a-kind event — this is where speed and the best-of-the-best meet.

As if the event could not be more unique, adding another aspect of exclusivity — Olympic Medallist Morgan Reeser presented by Henri Lloyd will be on the water each day serving as the appointed fleet coach. Following later in the evening Morgan will debrief the competitors, provide post-racing videos presentations concerning boat handling, spinnaker sets, gybes and take downs along with a question and answer session during dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.

Adding to the record level of turn-out is a simply astounding line-up of official competitors. Among them, Pieter Taselaar and his youthful crew, most notably known for The Morning Light Project will participate, as will Kimo Worthington calling tactics for relatively new Melges 32 owner Jim Swartz. Jud Smith will be on board with Bob Hesse; and one of a couple of West Coast entries Seadon Wijsen will team up with Stephen Pugh just to name a few.

The fun begins on Thursday, November 29 with registration and a skippers meeting. Weigh-in takes place on Friday morning, prior to the first signal at 11:00 a.m. with four races scheduled for the day. Another four races are slated for Saturday and two on Sunday. These are the official 'Take A Junior Sailing Days.'
