Stefano & Massimo Leporati Win 2008 Melges 32 Primo Cup

13 February 2008

Stefano and Massimo Leporati on Kismet won the 2008 Melges 32 Primo Cup by one slim point over Fausto Rubbini with Lorenzo Bressani calling tactics on Thule - Casino Di Venezia.  Stefano and Massimo's champion crew included Giorgio Tortarolo, Francesco Bruni, Alessandro Sodo Migliori, Marco Carpinello, Michele Cannoni and Daniele Fiaschi.

Racing commenced on Friday, 08 February and ran through Sunday, 10 February with a total of seven Melges 32s on the starting line. The three day regatta produced very challenging, tough conditions — light air and extremely shifty breezes put all the teams to the maximum test. Friday's racing found Rubbini leading the fleet as for the most part they stayed left giving them a great advantage. Joe Woods on Red from the UK also took to the left, charging ahead to finish second in the race — or so they thought. Unknowingly Woods was OCS costing him big in the results.

Others that did extremely well early on was Monaco's own Savino Formentini helming Bitipi with Flavio Grassi calling tactics and Enrico Pucci at the main and Giovanni Maspero on Joe Fly periodically match racing Leporati for position.

In the end Leporati took the prize in first place overall, Rubbini was second, Nicola Celon on Team Fantastica was third, Maspero was fourth, Formentini was fifth, Guido Miani on Pilot Italia - Flying Fish was sixth and Woods rounded out the fleet in seventh.

LAUNCHING THE MELGES 32 ON A GRAND SCALE : HUBLOT OF BATTISTELLA
Adding to the excitement was the first class, official Melges 32 launch of Hublot owned by Mr. Battistella. Right in front of the Yacht Club de Monaco — lights, music and festivities surrounded the christening of the boat. More than 500 sailors were around to watch as the beautiful Melges 32 showed off it's sleek hull and keel fin! The Melges 32 was celebrated Italian style!
