Charleston Race Week On Course To Set Attendance Records

16 March 2008

Charleston, SC; from Meaghan Van Liew - With just two weeks left until the end of the regular registration period for 2008 Charleston Race Week, organizers have received 56 entries from racing boats that have never competed at this premiere event before.

Organizers are urging teams that require mast stepping and boatyard launch to sign up immediately to receive their time allotment for launching. “We'd like everyone to call as soon as possible, as slots are filling quickly on a first-call, first serve basis,” said Danny Havens, Launch Coordinator. Smaller boats can splash their boats using either the 3-ton hoist at the Charleston Yacht Club or the convenient public ramps at Remley's Point, less then a mile from Race Headquarters at the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina.

Racers can still take advantage of Azalea Moving & Storage's generous offer to store all trailered boats in their secure storage facility in North Charleston until April 17th. Their facility is just minutes from the launching yard, Charleston Boat Works, and a short ride down I-26 to Charleston Yacht Club.

The continued growth of Charleston Race Week means tough work for busy Race Committees, and CRW organizers have responded by bringing in some of the best PROs in the business. “While our shore side activities are some of the best on earth, we know that the competitors come here to race first, and socialize second,” said Event Director Brad Van Liew. CORA representative and Race Director Randy Draftz added: “We've brought in great PROs so that we can get lots of action in on well-laid courses, and that's what these three will do.”

Among the officials is US Sailing Senior Judge and Senior Race Officer Wayne Bretsch. Bretsch is fresh from his 12th year as a PRO of Key West Race Week, and is a veteran PRO of some of the highest-profile events in the US. Joining Bretsch on the three-member PRO team are Susan R. Miller and Peter Blacklock, two avid one-design racers with substantial PRO experience throughout the Great Lakes and US East Coast in local, national, and international events.
