'Uka Uka Racing' Still In Charge After Two Hard Days Of Racing In Cagliari

28 June 2008

The second of three days of racing in beautiful Cagliari, Sardinia Italy concluded with yet another three incredible races. 2007 Melges 32 National Champion Claudio Recchi aboard Uka Uka Racing still leads after delivering a 4-3-2 scoreline. With six races in the bag, one discard goes into effect, leaving Recchi with an 11 point total.

In a fleet twelve boats strong, Recchi's Friday performance put him out front. And, out front he remains, but that doesn't mean things can't change drastically with tomorrow's final day of racing. Although Recchi is an outstanding sailor in his own right, the assistance of Gabriele Benussi calling tactics has served him well many times before. Their experience and skill from sailing the Melges 32 in Europe and the U.S. is evident.

Hot on Recchi's transom is new boat owner Savino Formentini on Bitipi. Formentini also had a satisfying day on Friday, but his incredible bullet in race one today (four in the series of six completed so far), combined with a fourth and a third, in series races five and six has brought him and his tactician Flavio Grassi an impressive result. They trail Recchi and Benussi by one very slim point.

In third place overall is one of the very first Melges 32 owners in Europe — Stefano Leporati with 2008 Melges 24 World Champion tactician Francesco Bruni on Kismet. Leporati and Bruni really stepped it up on in the performance category as they nailed a 2-1-1 in the finishes. This places them three points out of first, and two away from second place!

Looking ahead to tomorrow's racing conditions one thing is certain — the forecast calls for some intense starting sequences and dramatic finishes. Press and spectator boats alike are sure to be on the edge of their seats as every one of these competitive Melges 32s are worthy of the Cagliari title.

Sunday will conclude event two of the 2008 Audi Sailing Series of five. Stay tuned as a final race report will be posted soon.
