Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series 2009: The Numbers Assigned To Tender
15 April 2009
Milan, 14 April 2009 - As in the tradition of many sports disciplines, where players can choose their own numbers game, so do the owners of the second edition Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series, which happens in Malcesine this weekend (April 17-19), have chosen their own bow number that will represent them for the entire year of racing in the series.
Each team was assigned by the class to select a number — whatever you want, and that for several reasons to better identify the message of each crew. The reasons behind the various selections are varied: ranging from its point of sail number, for example 14 per Pinta GER 4014, 21 Mascalzone Latino ITA-2121, 69 for U.S. Bliskem USA-169. Could be a reference such as 23 per crew Roman Lea, and for Matrix the number 88, or a simple habit —Bitipi chose the number 9 to sporting traditions and personal memories.
For the British Team Barbarians, the choice fell to number seven Stuart Simpson and his crew considered this number to be amongst the greatest players — Eric Cantona and David Beckham as well as the number of legendary motorcycling champion Barry Sheene. Stefano di Properzio and his Mataran team chose a higher number 99 — "because the last will be first ... and why is the number of Cassano," stated di Properizio.
Jacopo Bianchetti, owner of Spirit of Simon made the choice of number 20. As if forced to continue in a sort of legend, "The boat is called the Spirit of Simon, to turn a terrible memory into a good thing, Simon toured with the Photos by Joshua Slocum, the first explorer that more than 100 years ago circumnavigated the globe solo. Well, Slocum was born February 20. The grandfather and uncle of Simon, both sailors were born February 20, as is the same for Simone Cino Ricci who adopted Simone at a young age advising him on everything. "On our Mumm 30, we selected the number 20, and the twentieth built. We launched out Melges 32 on February 20 2009."
The only one unable to choose was the reigning Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series Champions Claudio Recchi. He is sporting a brand new team and boat name — Team 93. He officially carries the honor to defend the ultimate number of leadership, 1.
