Devos' Alpha One and Delta Take Top Honors Verve Cup PHRF 3
24 August 2009
Article courtesy of Scott Nixon - August 13-16 in Chicago, Ill. the Verve Cup was sailed out of the Chicago Yacht Club on beautiful Lake Michigan. One-hundred and fifty one design and PHRF boats gathered for the event and conditions turned out to be excellent.
Three days of racing with 8 races completed for a great series resulted in some very tight racing in most of the classes. Friday saw winds in the 6-10 knot range from the South and Saturday was a bit more pressure from the South at 8-12 knots. Sunday a few thunderstorms rolled though the area creating some very high winds and surfing conditions. Wind speeds were 15-30 knots on Sunday and the Melges32s enjoyed some great downwind rides at speeds over 18 knots at times. Melges 32 racing was tight between Ryan DeVos’s Alpha One and Dalton DeVos’s Delta team. Team Alpha One took the first 4 races and then Dalton and the Delta team performed flawlessly in the big wind conditions to win the last 3 raced in a row. Both teams took 1,2 in the PHRF 3 class and team Alpha One took the class by only 2 points over Delta.
The Verve Cup is a wonderful regatta for nice conditions and beautiful Chicago racing with great race management. It also overlaps with the Chicago Air Show so there is plenty to see after the racing and the views of the show are fantastic from the lake. Hopefully we can get more Melges 32s out to the Midwest next summer to enjoy fantastic racing with warm weather, good winds and fresh water.
