Australia Melges 32 Fleet Taking Shape

26 January 2010

The Melges 32 fleet in Australia is quickly taking shape and strengthening fast. Check out this brief report from Australian Fleet Secretary, Tracey Walters regarding Australian fleet growth and progress.

Dear Melges 32 Owners,

Exciting news - the Australia Melges 32 fleet has grown by two during the month of January and additional inquiries are pouring in each day, as the numbers increase and the dollar is good. One boat has arrived and experienced its home on Sydney Harbour with Guy Stening, the other arrives tomorrow in the container and will head to Tassie with Greg Prescott. Both extremely experienced competitors, welcome to thrilling Melges 32 racing.

Please view the 2010 Regatta Schedule with the larger events on the East Coast. I know there are also ones in South Australia and Tassie that some off you are intending on doing. Heading into 2010 we kick start the racing season off with Geelong, the largest regatta in Australia, an amazing event both on and off the water. Drive away in your Audi at the Sydney Harbour Regatta in March and Sail Port Stephens offers perfect Melges 32 conditions in April. Min of 6 boats for our own start so it would be great if we can get everyone to these for some exciting one design racing.

We have just had a visit from Federico Michetti, (Melges Europe) two-time Melges 24 World and European Champion as well as fourth place finisher at the Melges 32 Worlds on Team 93. Federico is interested in growing our national fleet and international participation and shared his knowledge and experiences of Melges racing with us. He is keen to assist with some training clinics prior to a regatta and in conjunction with the M24 fleet which would be fantastic.

Also discussed was our first Melges 32 Australian Championships, When? Where?

Guy Stening, 2008 Mumm 30 World Champion has been selected by the International Melges 32 Class Association and has accepted the important role of Australian representative.

Guys role will be to uphold the Melges 32 constitution (see attached) in Australia. To help build and promote One Design Melges 32 racing in Australia. He will assist and encourage Australian participation at International events and encourage international competitors to race down under with our goal of a M32 Worlds in Australia, possibly 2012. Please forward any news, photo’s, results etc and advise if you need any assistance with parts, crew, freight, storage, accomodation etc. Looking forward to some outstanding Melges 32 racing this year.
