Go Red!

10 March 2010

Congratulations to Joe Woods (Torquay, UK) on Red as he is the 2010 Melges 32 Midwinter Series Champion. After three events — 2009 Gold Cup, Key West and the Miami Grand Prix — Woods, along with tactician Paul Goodison and additional crew members Dave Lenz, Shane Highes, Paddy Bettesworth, Jamie Binmore, Chris Cooper and Conner Myant have won the series. In second place overall is Jeff Ecklund (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) on STAR and Lanfranco Cirillo (Italy) on Fantastica was third.

Key West winner John Kilroy (Los Angeles, Calif.) on Samba Pa Ti was fourth and John Taylor (Jupiter Island, Fla.) on Ninkasi had a great series finishing fifth.

An impressive 31 teams from five countries — USA, UK, Italy, France and Japan enjoyed the series competition with almost half the fleet attending all three events. While the vast majority of the teams hail North America home, only seven of the teams were internationally based.

Woods had a tremendous winter season. He always came on strong and never seemed to lose focus of simply going out, sailing well and being consistent. He scored two second place finishes at Gold Cup and Key West. He completed the Miami Grand Prix in fifth. With the three events, Woods also is now the 2010 Melges 32 USA Sailing Series leader.
