There’s No Stopping Taselaar’s ‘Bliksem’ Melges 32

2 May 2010

Scarlino (Grosseto), May 2, 2010 - Reigning Melges 32 World Champion, U.S. based Pieter Taselaar on Bliksem won the second stage of the 2010 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series. With tactician Jeremy Wilmot, Bliksem knows but only one word: victory. With this success, Taselaar stretches his 'unbeaten' record and reputation on the circuit which began last season.

Although their victory is sweet, life has not been easy, especially with Luca Lalli on B.LinSailing.com and tactician Lorenzo Bressani acting as the greatest deterent regarding the uncertainty surrounding Taselaar’s success.

For the start of the seventh race, the breeze filled in nicely at 140 degrees with 14 knots under rainy conditions. With the left side heavily favored, advancement depended on boat speed more than anything else. The anticipated duel between Lalli and Taselaar continued as Bliksem stretched the right side of the first downwind leg, while Lalli sailed his own race and did not allow Taselaar to dictate his moves. Lalli took the lead at the first rounding, in front of Taselaar. For the second leg, Taselaar took advantage (and a big risk) by pursing the left side rounding in second. It was all out tactics for the second beat, but this time, with Lalli’s moves, it opened opportunity to Taselaar and others including Francesco Martino and tactician Vasco Vascotto on Pilot Italia to do well.

For the second race, Lalli’s early clear advantage diminished leaving plenty of room for Taselaar and Martino to advance. Martino, with Vascotto’s obvious flair, accelerated through the last jibe a few meters behind Taselaar. Martino, looking to do well on the right, had Bliksem on the radar however, Taselaar and Lalli took first and second respectively.

Despite Taselaar’s win in Scarlino, Lanfranco Cirillo on Fantastica with a sixth place finish, hangs on to the overall lead of the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series 2010.

The European Melges 32 fleet looks forward to Cagliari, on May 13-16, where the very first European Melges 32 Championship will take place.
