Plenty Of Action At The Rolex Big Boat Series | Melges 32 Pre-Worlds

16 September 2010

It was a foggy opening to the first day of competition at the 2010 Rolex Big Boat Series. Twenty-seven of the 32 teams expected to compete next week at the World Championship are on the line. Joe Wood on Red followed by reigning World Champion Pieter Taselaar on Bliksem, then Naofumi Kamei on Bros took the top spots in race one of the day. Trouble brewed early for fleet newcomer Dougie Douglass and his famous Goombay Smash, who received just that from Stuart Simpson on Team Barbarians. A 'simple Port tack and Starboard incident' left the hot to trot Smashers limping into the harbor with a nasty gash.

Taselaar continued the afternoon race with another smooth victory in race two. "Today felt really good. Boat speed was good. The crew work was really good as well. The first race today was difficult, the second was a little better." said Taselaar post racing. "There are a lot of really good teams here, and it's early. But, we're having fun."
