Copa Del Rey Audi Mapfre, Carroll Takes The Lead

2 August 2011

Palma de Mallorca, Spain - There are many reasons why tourists go to Palma de Mallorca during the summer: there are those who can not wait to savor the nightlife, those who love the weather, and those who love to socialize in one of the many fashionable pubs and restaurants. For sailors however, there is only one reason: Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre. The Melges 32 class debuted in Copa Del Rey today completing two races.

Under the watchful eye of two members from the Royal Family, HRH Prince Felipe and HRH Infanta Cristina of Spain while sailing on the same race course, Jason Carroll's Argo took the overall event lead. Carroll, along with tactician Cameron Appleton, who also won the last stage of the Audi Sailing Series in Malcesine, scored a first and a third putting them into top spot of the fleet's provisional standing. They were in great form in the southeasterly breeze despite the shifty conditions and big waves.

Trailing the Carroll-Appleton duo, in second overall, is reigning World Champion Luca Lalli and tactician Lorenzo Bressani aboard B-LinSailing. Lalli won the last race of the day after finishing sixth in race one. Lalli and Bressani are all smiles in second place. Two points further back, in third overall is the British team Dawn Raid driven by Oscar Strugstad, who first entered the Melges 32 class a short nine months ago. The team has progressed quite well thanks to the experience of Don Cowie, a former Barcelona Olympic silver medallist and historic mainsail trimmer of Emirates Team New Zealand and Michael Illbruck's famous Pinta program.

It was also a good day for newly crowned 2011 Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series Champion Lanfranco Cirillo on Fantastica. After a mediocre first race finish, Cirillo with tactician Michele Paoletti finished second behind Lalli in race two. He stands fourth in the provisional rankings.

Great Britain's Peter Rogers on Highlife and Spanish contingent Marc de Antonio on Bribon-Movistarhold steadfast in fifth and sixth tied with 11 points each.

The Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre resumes tomorrow at 13.00 (Palma time) with two more races. One discard will be counted after the completion of the eighth race.
